Handwriting paper (also called primary lined paper or three-line paper) has a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline for every row, with a gap below for letters like g, p and y. The midline shows children exactly how tall lowercase letters should be.

Set "Writing line height" to match the writer: 1 inch rows for pre-K and kindergarten, 3/4 inch for first grade, 5/8 inch for second grade and 1/2 inch for older children practising cursive. The PDF prints at true size.

Frequently asked questions

What size handwriting lines should I use for my child?

A common rule of thumb: 1 inch rows for ages 4–5, 3/4 inch for ages 5–6, 5/8 inch for ages 6–7 and 1/2 inch from about age 7. If letters keep running over the lines, go one size up.

Why is the middle line dashed?

The dashed midline marks the height of lowercase letters such as a, c and e, and where the humps of m and n reach. The dashes make it easy to tell apart from the top line and baseline.

Can I add a space for drawing?

Yes. Tick "Picture box at the top" to add a box above the lines, or use the primary writing paper template, which has it turned on.
